Low Virtual Memory – What to do ?
If you are a lazy person like many computer wizards, you would have encountered an annoying pop-up window many times, which notifies you that you are running on low virtual memory, and Windows is trying to increase it. If it happens once in a while, then its OK. Nothing to worry about. But if it happens repeatedly, then you need to take action, because now it has started affecting the performance of your PC.
How to optimize Virtual memory in XP
A few simple steps.
.
- Open Control Panel > System.
- Click on Advanced tab
- Click the Settings button in the Performance panel.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Click the Change button in the Virtual memory panel.
- It was lying deep, but you found it.
- Now, you have two options. If you exactly about your system, you can choose the size of the virtual memory, otherwise select the System managed size option. It is safe.

Simple, isn’t it?

Interesting.
Times are a changing.
I like XP but it can be tough to fix sometimes. (But it is still easier for me to understand than NT!)
Thanks for posting.

If I already have enough RAM on my system, then I would just use the virtual memory as a backup solution. Why? Because too much back and forth movement of the operating system from the page file and the RAM will just slow down performance aside from the fact that the speed of the read/write on the hard drive is slower than RAM.
Furthermore, constant adding and removing of info on the page files can cause files to be fragmented, adding up to the slow speed. But anyway…Adjusting the default settings is possible to make it run even more smoothly. Windows sets the paging file size to 1.5 times the actual physical RAM. By increasing this amount you can avoid the common virtual memory error messages and freezes. Here’s another good site that explains a much more in-depth concept of optimizing virtual memory. http://virtualmemoryfix.com
