Windows has a built in algorithm, which constantly scans shared resources on a network to identify any newly-shared resources, such as a printer or a folder. Although it is a useful feature, but most users do not need it because it does not happen too often that Folders and Printer status are changing on a network.

But this scanning consumes valuable system resources, and you can consider to switch this feature off to speed up Windows performance.

How to disable them to run Windows faster

Few simple steps

  • Click Start > My Computer.
  • Click on Tools > Folder Options.
  • Click on View tab
  • Uncheck the first checkbox Automatically search for network folders and printers.
  • Click OK and restart your PC.

This simple tweak may not be amazingly running your windows fast, but small tweaks does contribute towards actually making Windows run fast.

Some of them initially look to be very useful, but soon some people get irritated with them. Besides being a cause of irritation, they are also a drain on precious resources of your Windows.

Before proceeding, let me make it clear that this is a personal preference, and if you find them useful like many others, then you don’t read this post any further.

How to Get Rid of Balloon Tips – Speed up Windows

There are two ways in which you can accomplish the same thing.

Method 1: Registry Edit Method

  • Click Start > Run
  • Type regedit > OK.
  • Find the following key…HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
  • Edit a REG_DWord value for EnableBalloonTips and set its value to 0.

Method 2: Group Policy Editor Method

  • Click Start > Run
  • Type GPEDIT.MSC > Press enter.
  • Go to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu & Taskbar
  • Double-click on Remove Balloon Tips on Start Menu Items and choose Enabled.
  • Click OK.

Although this may not look like to be contributing a lot towards making Windows faster, but this is a fact that if you want to speed up Windows, then such small tweaks contribute their bits.

Replace Background to Load Windows XP faster

Follow these simple steps, which will setup a plain colored background on your Windows.

  • Right click anywhere on the desktop.
  • Select Properties.
  • Click on the Desktop tab.
  • In the Background window select None.
  • Save your settings by clicking OK.

Disk Cleanup is utility of Windows XP to free up disk space on your hard drive. Disk Cleanup first analyzes and searches your hard drive for files that are no longer of any use. It then gives your various options to clean up your disk by removing these identified files.

There are a number of different file categories that Disk Cleanup targets when performing the initial disk analysis:

  • Compression of old files
  • Temporary Internet files
  • Temporary Windows files
  • Downloaded Program files
  • Recycle Bin
  • Removal of unused applications or optional Windows components
  • Setup Log files
  • Offline files

To make the most efficient use of the available resources, Windows XP swaps files from your RAM to the hard disk. There are 3 simple steps.

  • Click on Start > Run.
  • Type chkdsk /f C: and press OK.
  • If you have more than one Hard Disk, or multiple partitions on your hard drive, then repeat the process for other partitions by just replacing the drive letter.

That is all. You might not experience the improvement in certain cases, but in some cases, it will make Windows XP faster.
