Security Essentials – The Free Internet Security Tool from Microsoft
Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) (previously codenamed Morro) is a free antivirus software created by Microsoft that provides protection against viruses, malware, spyware, adware, scareware, rogue security software, rootkits, keyloggers, dialers, worms and trojans for Windows XP (x86), Windows Vista, and Windows 7 (both x86 and x64).
MSE replaces Windows Live OneCare, a commercial subscription-based antivirus service and the free Windows Defender, which only protected users from adware and spyware. It is geared for consumer use, unlike Microsoft’s upcoming enterprise-oriented product Microsoft Forefront.

Fine, But Which is the Best Free Internet Security Tool
Independent Security Researcher Team at http://www.av-comparatives.org has been testing and comparing popular Internet Security Software for long. This time they have published a report based upon the testing of popular security suites against new malware and viruses.
They had updated the virus definitions of these software suites with the database updated till February 2010 and tested their efficacy in detecting the malware, which were developed after that. This essentially meant that the definitions didn’t contained the signatures of these malware and these software suites were expected to detect them based upon their heuristic and analytic powers.
The test results show that Microsoft’s Security Essential is rated the best FREE Internet Security Tool in detecting the new malware threats. It is not the absolute best, but Best among the Free Suites.
There are lots of other interesting observations as well.

I’ve actually found MSE worked better than Panda Cloud.. It is by far the best free option out there, and updates automatically and easily in the background. I’ve also noticed it is quite fast, for all that it does, so good job Microsoft (for once!)

At least I think the graph is reliablecan that explain some problems.

Good test and quantitative result. The downside for me is that MSE tends to hog my resources even greater than Avira or Eset Free. And both Avira and Eset do not fail in detecting new infections on internet so I think MSE still needs time.

Good test and quantitative result

Good analysis and quantitative result. The downside for me is that MSE tends to hog my assets even greater than Avira or Eset Free. And both Avira and Eset do not abort in audition new infections on internet so I anticipate MSE still needs time.

Nice list, but in my opinion a lot of the microsoft products are source hogs. Not surprised to see McAfee low on list either.

How is this better than COMODO Internet Security? I used both and I think COMODO is better.
March 16th, 2011 at 6:01 pm
This is a well known fact, that microsoft does have their free internet security tool, yet it is funny no many do use it. Is it because because they are skptical of their free products or simply because they have bad reviews?
March 28th, 2011 at 12:24 pm
Latley Microsoft has greatly improved MS Essentials. Been using it for about 4 months now and so far so good. Although, other free ones give it a run for the money, or lack there of should I say.

You guys are horrible that use those slow pos programs like McAfee, Symantec, AVG ect. Smh. Stop putting out lame misleading info to these poor people about uninstalling windows security as well. You’re lame. Scan your Pc regularly with Advanced Windows Care from IObit.com and stop, for god sakes, STOP using those SLOW ASS SCANNERS!!! How you gonna find a virus if your hardware can’t even be properly scanned in time? Avira is slow but a good program. Microsoft is slow but thorough as far as I’ve seen. Has caught quite a few bugs for me. The programs that keep me clean are CCleaner, Advanced SystemCare 4, IObit Security 360, and Malewarebytes Pro for good realtime protection. Now one program never is satisfactory, this is just fact. It is good to have a few programs because of various updates and differences in software. This will improve results but it is still upon the user to be the mechanic of their own machine. You have to regularly run scans and keep your PC clean. Clear hidden cache and always browse privately. Set your internet options on your browser: Tools > Options > Privacy.. then change History to Never remember history and hit OK.

very interesting post

This was a great move by Microsoft to engage their potential customers with their security software. What I think that is most important is that Micrsoft security essential is being used by most of the Internet users unwilling to pay for a antivirus. Most of the IT professionals do not want to use it because of the myth associated with free software. Thanks for the statistical data.
November 25th, 2011 at 7:52 am
I use Microsoft Security Essentials as my primary Anti-Virus software. It has performed really well in my opinion, and has dedected quite a few threats over the time. However, I agree that it isn’t a only tool to keep your computer clean and well-optimized. I’d also recommend using a registry cleaner and system optimization software, such as CCleaner or Kingsoft PC Doctor, which also keep the registry organized.
