Defragmentation is a process which reduces of physically reorganizing the contents of the hard disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation.

When the system finds the contiguous pieces of a file close together on the hard disk, then the time taken to fetch that reduces considerably. This is one of the most important utility to regularly use, if you want to make your Windows run faster.
There are lot of de-fragmenter utilities available on the Internet. Most of these utilities are FREE of cost, but some even charge you for using them. But, you don’t really use them. There already is a nice Disk Defragmenter utility built in within your Windows itself. Make it a habit to regularly use it to speed up your Windows.
How to Defragment Hard Disks to Make Windows Run Faster
A few simple steps…
- Click on Start > Run.
- Type dfrg.msc > OK.
- Select your drive and press Defragment.
- Simple.

The built in defragmenter is good if the drives dont get fragmented often and if you have time on your hands. For drives that are severely fragmented and large, an easy way to control fragmentation is to set an automatic defragmenter to run in the background. Some of these defragmenters actually work without hogging resources. In my opinion, they are worth the price.
