I personally try to make a backup of my initial clean install of XP and then when I feel it's getting sluggish I just ghost the drive and all is well again. (That's when it's not just a small problem to solve). I also try not to be a install maniac. Those days are over. Agreed, installing Ubuntu should be one of the options.
