Firewalls protect your computer from giving unauthorized access to others, without your consent. But sometimes, there may be some gaps or holes in your Firewall which can invite hackers to breach your Internet Security. One of the common way in which a hacker can penetrate your Internet Security is by exploiting the Open Ports in your Firewall.

Firewalls restrict communication between your computer and the Internet. But sometimes, you might need to adjust settings for some other programs that prefer an open connection. You can make an exception for these programs, so that they can communicate through the Windows Firewall.

In some other cases to let programs work properly, your might need to open up some ports also. All these exceptions, weaken your security and sometimes you are not fully aware of the consequences of the allowing these exceptions.

Use OpenDNS to Block Conficker / Downad Worm


The recent attack of the dreaded Worm Conficker is one of the most widely spread in the history of Internet. No other worm has spread so quickly and affected so many of the computers worldwide. Millions of computers have been affected and some estimates mention that as many as one in every six computers is infected wtih it.

One of the reasons behind the huge succes of Conficker Worm has been its capacity to use advanced algorithms to constantly change the domains used for getting instructions. If a Worm uses a few domain names to get the instructions, then it becomes easier for the security vendors to block that domain. Blocking that domain effectively chokes the supply line of the Worm and it doen’t remain as lethal as it could be.
