Data Portability – Take MySpace profile to other Social sites

data portability MySpace has announced in the month of May that they are working on data sharing partnerships with Yahoo, Ebay, Twitter and their own Photobucket subsidiary. The purpose of this project called MySpace “Data Availability” was to allow users to have a single profile across all major Social Media sites. The users will be required to make changes to their profile at one place, and it will seamlessly be updates at other sites.

Yesterday, MySpace Developer Team announced the arrival of Data Portability. They have made their APIs available for external use and called upon the other sites to make use of it to enable their users to leverage the power of their social data outside of the MySpace.com domain. It has been said that with its help, data can now be available to MySpace users no matter where they go on the Internet.

MySpace said…

We’ve also taken steps to ensure that none of this new functionality compromises any of our user’s privacy or security.   You will find a new 3rd party site privacy dashboard located in the account settings of your MySpace profile. Just look under Linked Sites to view it.  From here users can manage the relationship between their data and individual 3rd party sites.   Any revocation of access to data from within MySpace takes place immediately at the external site as well.   This ensures users won’t have their data floating around the internet without them being aware of it.

Malware Alarm | Keyloggers can intrude through your IE 6

malware removal Even after about one year of the release of IE7 and the availability of better browsers like Firefox 3 and Opera 9.5, many Internet user still use IE6 for their browsing. This is due to the inertia of change. People just want to carry on doing what they have been doing, even if it is less productive and prone to vulnerabilities.

Same is the case here. A latest bug in the Internet Explorer 6 has raised an alarm, which might allow malwares like keyloggers to intrude into your system and cause damage. As per a report published by McAfee, a well known malware removal vendor, an unpatched cross-site scripting bug in IE6 could be used by hackers to capture keystrokes and steal other information.

.

In a related statement, Secunia, the Anti malware agency, has said…

The vulnerability is caused due to an input validation error when handling the "location" or "location.href" property of a window object. This can be exploited by a malicious website to e.g. open a trusted site and execute arbitrary script code in a user’s browser session in context of the trusted site.
The vulnerability is confirmed in IE6 on Windows XP SP2. Other versions may also be affected.

However, it has been said that IE 7, and the Firefox 3, doesn’t contain the bug and it is safe to use them with the threat of malwares and keyloggers.

So, watch out, before using IE6. If you are still running on IE, then why not make a smart move to switch to Firefox 3.

Creative Commons Addon | Protect Your Rights on MS Office Documents

Plagiarism, the unauthorized use of somebody’s work, is a big headache for the content creators. You make a document or website, after many sleepless nights, only to find that the same has been published elsewhere, and that other person is getting more exposure and credit than you.

For instance, my lost post on A beginners guide on how to remove keyloggers was picked by one auto blogger, which runs a decent looking site and was posted here at http://www.techdispenser.com/slots/view/5479 (link removed). Although due credits were there, but what bothered me was the place Google gave to that post in its SERP. My post was indexed by Google within one hour. When I checked on Google (check yourself) after about six hours, I was astonished to find that I was sitting at No. 2 at Google, while my copy was at No. 1 position.

2 This led me to search more about plagiarism, and I found something interesting, which I thought to share with you.

Most of us already have heard about Creative Commons, which are a way to allow the restricted use of your content, with due credits. What I was knowing is that Creative Commons license can also be used for Offline Microsoft Documents. This facility is provided by an agreement by Creative Commons, Microsoft, and 3Sharp, LLC, an independent solution provider, which provide you an Office addon to enable you to embed a Creative Commons license into a document that you create using the popular applications: Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office PowerPoint, or Microsoft Office Excel.

Share, Remix, Reuse — Legally

Creative Commons provides free tools that let authors, scientists, artists, and educators easily mark their creative work with the freedoms they want it to carry. You can use CC to change your copyright terms from "All Rights Reserved" to "Some Rights Reserved." Learn more about various choices among the Creative Commons Licenses here.

However, when I downloaded this addon and tried to test that on my laptop running Windows Vista with MS Office 2007, I got this Window…

Here I gave up. If you have Windows XP and MS Office 2003, would you like to share your experience ?

Malware Alarm – 50% of all Malware sites are Chinese

BadwareSitesMay2008 As per a recent report published in Stopbadware, China is the host of more than 50% of all Malware sites on the Internet today. StopBadware.org is a partnership among academic institutions, technology industry leaders, and volunteers committed to protecting Internet users from threats to their privacy and security caused by bad software. The authenticity of this Malware Alarm study is also somehow supported by Google, which has flagged all the 2,00,000 sites reported in this study.

Malware is a general term to refer to a malicious software, which has primarily been fabricated with the malicious intention to infiltrate or damage a computer system. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest adware, and other malicious and unwanted software.

Interestingly, Google, which is also one of the sponsors of this study, has been ranked as the 5th largest source of malware sites. Possibly this is due to the large number of SPAM Blogs on Google controlled Blogger.com.

This report has come out at a time when China is under pressure from Tibetan Movement right in the mid of final preparation of the Olympics. Thanks, that I don’t know Chinese and as such am yet to visit a Chinese website.
.

You can also read the full copy of the StopBadware.org report on this link. This report has some good insight and may of interest to you if you are involved in the malware war for the eradication of malware.

A beginners guide on how to remove keyloggers

1 This post will introduce a simple and free keylogger removal utility, but let us first know a little bit more about Keyloggers.

Keystroke Logging, often called Keylogging, is the dubious art of capturing and recording Keystrokes as you type on your keyboard. The sole purpose of Keylogger spyware is to spy on your data, collect sensitive information and provide it to others for fraudulent uses, although sometimes keylogger software are also used for benign purposes also.

There are basically Three Categories of Keyloggers.

  • Hardware Keyloggers: They are physically connected either within your keyboard or between your keyboard and your PC.
  • Keylogger Software: They reside within your PC software.
  • Other Types of Keyloggers: Besides the above types, there are other types of keyloggers also like Remote Access software Keyloggers,  Remote Access Hardware Keyloggers also known as Wireless Hardware Keyloggers, Wireless Keylogger sniffers and Acoustic Keylogger, but are not so common.

How to get rid of Keyloggers:

Hardware Keyloggers can be easily prevented, if you are vigilant enough. You just have to be more careful while allowing access to your hardware. And if you cannot avoid it, just keep regular watch on the cables and keyboards.

To remove Keylogger Software, there are multiple techniques used, depending upon the type of keylogger program being used. Following techniques are commonly used by the anti keyloggers.

  • Use Anti-spywares: Many of the keylogger freeware are able to detect most of the keylogger freeware and remove them. So use a good quality Anti-Spyware program.
  • Use Good Firewalls: Firewalls do not remove keyloggers but they spy keyloggers and prevent the data being transacted by them to their remote masters.
  • Automatic form filler programs: This is a smart way to secretly enter your username and password without using keyboards. Something like Google Toolbar. But if you prefer to disable keyloggers in this manner then you have to be sure of the form filler program and that should be trustworthy.
  • Web Based Keyboards: The are also used to prevent keylogger activities. Many websites provide an online keyboard just near the username and password fields. You can use them through your mouse. No Keyboards keys are used and hence you avoid keylogger detection.
  • There are many other techniques like use of Alternative keyboard layouts, Speech Recognitions, Handwriting recognition etc., which are not that popular but are effective to disable Keylogger activities.

If you want to have a decent free anti keylogger software and not in the mood to search more, then KeyScrambler is a FREE download to stop Keylogger. KeyScrambler Anti Keylogger is also available as a browser addon for Firefox 3. You can safely download it from Mozilla Firefox 3 addon site.
