FolderShare : How to synch files and folders online

We recently posted about SyncTools, a web tools from Microsoft for synchronizing your files and folders saved on different PCs. SyncTool is a standalone program, and its drag and drop feature doesn’t require you to be hooked on to the Internet. But it requires manual intervention. Every time you want to synchronize your files and folders, you have to do it manually.

If it irritates you, try FolderShare

FolderShare works in the background. You don’t have to do anything. You just have to tell FolderShare website about which folders you want to synchronize. And you have to download FolderShare Satellite software on all your PCs you want to synchronize. Whenever your systems are online, they will automatically get updated in the background.

FolderShare also offers you to share your files and folders with others. From their website, you can send invitations to your friends to share your files.

RoamDrive | Use email accounts to store your files

Nowadys, email accounts have huge storage space, which largely remains unutilized. For instance, my Gmail account has 3.5 GB storage space, but currently uses only 112MB. Why not put the remaining space for some productive use. There are many free web tools, with which you can use your email accounts to store your files.

This not only gives you additional storage space, but also lets you access your files from anywhere, from any computer connected to Internet.

RoamDrive, is one such utility, I specially like. It makes the process to store your files just a simple drag and drop activity. You don’t need to send the files as email attachments. You just have to store once your username and password for once, and then use this nice tool just like a virtual storage space on you PC.

This free web tool works with Gmail, MSN and Hotmail.

SyncToy from Microsoft | How to synchronize files

If your online life is divided at different locations; like office and home, you may be wanting to synchronize different files and folders, which are located at your office computer, your home PC, your laptop and your USB drives.

There are many options. Simple copy and paste. But that is too crude.

A few freeware like Allway Sync etc. They are nice but, somehow, I am always skeptical of using third party software.

Now Microsoft has released latest version of SyncToy 2.0 beta for letting you synchronize your files. It is free and comes from a trustworthy source like Microsoft. And so, I like it. With this, you can easily copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers so as to achieve perfect synchronization.
Independent Thoughts:
Getting domain registration is the first step of site hosting. A cheap web hosting service may be employed, in order to save more for wireless internet providers. But this fact should not effect the affiliate marketing. Installing internet phone services depends upon the host too and software tools are also available to check the affiliate.

Conduit.com | How to create free toolbar for your blog or website

Creating toolbars for your website or blogs are an excellent method of promoting your website. Customized Toolbars give your website a constant exposure on the user’s desktop to your website. It is a nice idea, but requires dedicated fans and viewers. The popularity of a toolbar depends upon its usability.

There are a few websites, which offer to help you create a free toolbar for your blog or website. One such service is Conduit. It is simple, fast and easy. And the best part is that… it is free.

Why it is free ? Because it requires that you place a search box in your toolbar. When your readers do search queries through your toolbar, then they are also presented a few sponsored results and if they click on them, then the revenue generated is shared with Conduit.

Nice thinking.

How to backup MS Outlook files

MS Outlook is the default mail client for many users and avid Outlook users contain all their mail, contact, calendar and huge personal data in Outlook.

So, it is highly important to know how to take backup of MS Outlook files regularly. This small tutorial is an attempt towards that.

How to:

There are two methods for backuking up Outlook files, Easy method and a slight difficult method.

First, off-course the easy one. Go to Microsoft, download the free MS Outlook Backup utility and run it at regular intervals. Simple. But it requires you to have Genuine Windows copy. If you have that, you don’t require to read this post any further. If not, go ahead to the other method.

For MS Outlook 2003…

(Look out this space for Taking backup of MS Outlook 2007 files, in a later post)

You just have to locate your Personal Folder file (.pst) file which contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. In case you are using the archiving feature, then you will also have another file for Archive folders. After locating it, just make a copy of this (these two) files, store them and use them for restoration whenever required.

But where are these files.

Yes, this is a tricky part. Follow these steps.

For Backup…

  • Start Outlook Express.
  • Right Click on the Outlook Today icon in your Outlook Shortcuts and select Properties.
  • A Personal Folder Properties dialog box will open. Click Advanced.

  • In the next dialog box, look for the path. Note it down or use Ctrl+C to copy the path to your Clipboard.
  • Close Outlook and start Windows Explorer
  • Go to the noted path, or if you had copied the path to your clipboard, simply use Ctrl+V in the address bar of explorer.

  • In this folder you will find the outlook.pst file, which you were searching. Take a copy of this file and store at a safe location. Not on the same computer but at a different location. Your backup is complete.

For Restoration…

Simply paste the backup file at the same location. But this will overwrite the current data. A better approach will be to use Import feature for restoration.

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. Click on File > Import and Export.
  3. Click on “Import from another program or file” > Next.

  4. Click “Personal Folder File (.pst)” > Next.

  5. Browse and select the PST file, which you have backed up > Next

  6. If required, follow the same steps for Archives also.
